Nebraska Rethinks Casino PetitionsOn Monday, Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning said he believes that casino gambling and video keno should not be included on the November ballot. When asked for his opinion by Secretary of State John Gale, the attorney general made it known that the casino measure is against the state constitution's limit on entering similar ballot proposals more than a single time in three years. Nebraska has already declined two casino plans in November 2004, the one touted by Las Vegas casino interests and the other by the Legislature. Even though some of the details of the past proposals differ may from the new, some think it's basically the same. The new casino petition is being rallied for by Boyd Gaming Inc., owner of several casinos around the United States. As for the keno measure, Bruning said that this would only allow a form of gambling which is not authorized in the Nebraska state constitution. He also added that this will be likewise in violation of the three-year rule in the way it calls for expanded gambling. Gale has the final decision if either issue can be on the ballot. According to him, his decision will be heard this Wednesday. On the New York Stock Exchange, Shares of Boyd Gaming closed down 16 cents at $38.36. |
