Millennium Dome Ranks No. 1The Millennium Dome grabs the top spot in the first round in the race to become Britain's first super casino. This is despite the controversial air surrounding the Dome, because of Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott's links to the owner of the Dome, Philip Anschutz. The Dome's ranking was announced by the Casino Advisory Board in its website, while Glasgow came in at second, and Blackpool came in at third. However, many speculate that if the Greenwich site wins the super casino bid, it will be facing many legal hurdles, as Prescott has been already accused of compromising the casino bidding process because of his association with Anschutz. Prescott has been under heavy criticism because of his stay at the ranch of the billionaire Dome owner. Prescott was also reprimanded by the parliamentary ethics watchdog for failing to register the visit. Prescott only registered the stay when the issue became public, 11 months later. Prescott was further put on the spot when an email emerged showing that his department had tried to bump out a rival application. The Casino Advisory Board's rankings marked each of the eight short-listed location's application for its suitability, its need for regeneration, any social impact, community benefits and the "probability of implementation". The Dome scored 67 points, Glasgow scored 66 points, while Blackpool, was in third place with 65 points. |
