Las Vegas Casinos – Government Short History
The city of Las Vegas was built-in on March 16 1911 and up to 1944 the city was run under a "commission" shape of government with each official having managerial control over definite operating departments of the Las Vegas. Ever since January 1 1944 Las Vegas has run under what is normally known as a "council" structure of government. This form of government was approved by a vote of the people with subsequent Las Vegas City Charter adoption by the legislature.
Up to 1975 the voters of Las Vegas at large elected the mayor and four city councilmen. A vote of the citizens in June of 1973 approved a City Charter adjustment dividing the city into four wards. This allowed the mayor to be elected at large and each councilman to be elected by the voters of his or her own ward. The City Charter alteration was subsequently adopted by the legislature with the first vote by ward held in 1975. The elected officials chose to make use of the title "commissioner" until 1983 when a new City Charter accepted by the legislature changed their title to "councilman."
A vote of the people in 1999 accepted an consultative ballot query to separate the city into six wards. Anticipating a positive vote, the Nevada Legislature and City Council had before approved allowing legislation permitting the growth to six wards.
